What code DI_f008 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert indicates that a speed sensor problem was detected.

Co s tím: vůz nepojede a restart nepomůže. Objednejte odtah do servisu.

Zamów holowanie do serwisu. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Unable to drive” and the car will not move off. What happened: the drive inverter lost the signal from one track of the motor speed sensor. The service description sums it up as a speed sensor problem. Why that ends the drive: a Tesla's electric motor does not spin up on its own — the inverter has to drive it knowing exactly where the rotor is at any instant. From that it switches the phases in precise order and timing. The speed sensor is what tells it that position. Without it the inverter does not know where to send current, and the motor would at best fail to spin, at worst spin wrongly. So the car would rather not go at all. What “track A” means: the sensor has several channels that complement and check one another. Losing one of them is enough for the inverter to stop trusting the signal. What usually causes it: a faulty sensor, a damaged or chafed cable to it, a corroded connector. The sensor sits directly on the drive unit, in an environment of heat, vibration and — in winter — salt. It is a place where wiring suffers. What to do: the car will not go and a restart will not help. Arrange a tow to a service centre. There is nothing to do yourself, because the sensor is part of the drive unit and replacing it is specialist work. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
