What code DI_u013 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Both Pedals Pressed

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Both the brake pedal and the accelerator were pressed at the same time.

If this alert is present, it is likely that the brake pedal was pressed first and while it was pressed, the accelerator was also pressed. In this case, there should be torque available.

Driver experiences with code DI_u013

This part is written by you. If you have had code DI_u013, tell us when it appeared, what brought it on and how it ended — for the next person, one such sentence is often worth more than the entire service documentation.

Vůz v takové situaci dá přednost brzdě a plyn ignoruje. Proč to Tesla hlásí: elektromobil zrychluje okamžitě a bez zvuku motoru, takže si člověk nechtěného sešlápnutí plynu nemusí všimnout.

Auto w takiej sytuacji daje pierwszeństwo hamulcowi i ignoruje gaz. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Both Pedals Pressed” and it is one of the few messages with nothing to do with the technology. The car is simply pointing out what the driver is doing. What happened: you pressed the brake and the accelerator at the same time. The service description adds a useful detail — in the vast majority of cases the brake came first and the accelerator joined it. In that situation the car gives priority to the brake and ignores the accelerator. Why Tesla reports it: an electric car accelerates instantly and without engine noise, so an accidental brush of the accelerator is not necessarily obvious. It most often happens in a garage, while parking and reversing, with your foot on the brake and its edge catching the accelerator. The car is flagging that it is receiving contradictory instructions. When it means more: if the message appears without you touching the accelerator at all. That can mean a sticking pedal, something underneath it — most often a shifted or unsecured floor mat, a classic — or a faulty sensor. Look under the pedals first. What to do: release one of the pedals. Nothing needs repairing and the code causes no restriction. But if it appears often and you are certain you are not pressing the accelerator, inspect the footwell and get it checked. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
