What code DI_u014 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: Unable to Drive

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Drive Inverter has detected that the 12V battery is not being adequately supported by the vehicle, which means the vehicle might lose 12V power while being driven.

To set this condition, one of the following must occur:The Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) current is The IBS voltage is < 12.9V.

The GTW_12VState signal is in one of the following: DCDC_NOT_ENABLING12V_NOT_SUPPORTEDBMS_MIAFAULT_WAKEDCDC_RETRY

Objednejte odtah do servisu, případně výměnu dvanáctivoltové baterie.

Objednajte odťah do servisu, prípadne výmenu dvanásťvoltovej batérie.

W starszych Modelach S i X to akumulator ołowiowy o żywotności około trzech do czterech lat, który odchodzi często nagle, a zimą wcześniej. Druga możliwość to brak doładowywania — wtedy problem leży w przetwornicy zasilającej go z dużej baterii. Zamów holowanie do serwisu, ewentualnie wymianę akumulatora dwunastowoltowego. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Unable to Drive” and the car will not move off. Behind this message is the 12-volt system, not the drivetrain. What happened: the drive control unit found that the 12-volt battery is not being adequately supported by the rest of the car — in other words, that it could lose 12-volt power while driving. So it does not permit driving at all. Why it is handled so strictly: without the 12-volt system there is no steering assistance, no brake assist, no screen, and no contactors to connect the high voltage. Losing that on the move is incomparably worse than failing to leave a car park. Tesla would rather not let the car onto the road while it is uncertain. What usually lies behind it: a 12-volt battery at the end of its life, by far the most common cause. On the older Model S and X this is a lead-acid battery good for roughly three to four years, which often fails suddenly and sooner in winter. The other possibility is that it is not being recharged, in which case the problem is in the converter that feeds it from the main battery. What to do: this is the classic reason a Tesla stays put in a car park. The car will not drive and a restart will not help. Arrange a tow to a service centre, or a 12-volt battery replacement. If the message appeared shortly after a battery change, have the charging checked rather than the battery itself. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
