What code DI_w020 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

A speed sensor problem was detected.

Co s tím: nechte to vyčíst a opravit.

Was tun: Auslesen und beheben lassen.

Opis serwisowy upraszcza to do problemu z czujnikiem obrotów. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

This code has no message of its own on screen, but it shows up in diagnostics on cars that behave oddly when pulling away. What happened: the drive inverter detected a motor encoder error in hardware. The service description simplifies it to a speed sensor problem. Why the position sensor is fundamental to an electric motor: an AC motor does not turn by itself — current has to be fed in at the right moment relative to the rotor's position. The inverter has to know exactly where the rotor is in order to know which winding to energise. On a combustion engine that is fixed mechanically; on an electric motor the electronics govern all of it and depend on the sensor. What happens when the sensor plays up: the drive can jerk, get noisy, lose power or cut out. Sometimes it only shows at certain speeds or under certain loads, so the fault seems random. That is exactly why the sensor is monitored separately — without it the motor's poor behaviour would be hard to explain. Why the word “hardware” matters: it means the check logic in the circuit caught the error, not a software evaluation. That narrows the search to the sensor, its wiring and the inverter's input circuit. What usually causes it: a faulty sensor, a damaged or damp connector, chafed wiring, interference from power cables, less often a fault in the inverter itself. What to do: have it read out and repaired. You can usually still drive, but the drive's behaviour may be unpredictable, and that is not a state in which you set off on the motorway. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
