What code ESP_a058 means

The electronic stability program — ESP, ABS, traction control and brake force distribution. These codes show up as warning lights and some assistance systems dropping out. The car still brakes, just without electronic help.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

ESP_a058_ReLWSSLostSignal

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

The screen shows “ABS (anti-lock braking system) disabled” and this is one of the messages not worth postponing. What happened: every wheel has a speed sensor. By comparing them the electronics can tell whether a wheel is locking or spinning — ABS, stability control and traction control all rest on that. This code means the signal from one of those sensors has stopped arriving. Without it the system does not know what is happening at that wheel, and would rather switch off than intervene on incomplete data. What it means on the road: stability control and traction control are off entirely and ABS is degraded. The brakes still work mechanically, but under hard braking the wheels can lock and the car can lose steering control — precisely what ABS otherwise prevents. On wet roads, snow and in corners you will notice it most. Causes are usually mechanical: a damaged sensor, a broken or chafed cable at the wheel, a corroded connector, dirt and metal filings on the tone ring, occasionally damage after a wheel change or suspension repair. What to do: drive gently, expect longer stopping distances and avoid hard braking. Diagnosis is straightforward — a service centre reads out which wheel is sending no signal. Tesla's own description names checking the connections and, if needed, replacing the sensor as the remedy. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
