What code ESP_d058 means

The electronic stability program — ESP, ABS, traction control and brake force distribution. These codes show up as warning lights and some assistance systems dropping out. The car still brakes, just without electronic help.

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Lateral Acceleration Sensor: Adjustment is not possible, and the offset is too large.

There is an Ays failure due to a lateral acceleration offset or mounting position that is out of limit.

During normal driving, a symmetrical driving situation is assumed. In this case, the mean driving direction is straight ahead and the long time filtered lateral acceleration value is equivalent to the offset. The long time filter is a low pass filter that after 30 km, 95% of the initial offset is compensated. The offset is initialized with the Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) value (offset of the last ignition cycle). The read value is limited to 2 m/s�. A failure is set immediately when offset AysOffset exceeds the limit P_ayInOfsFineErr (default value: 2.25 m/s�).

In addition, there is a check for a sudden change in the signal offset due to, for example, a misalignment of the HU after an accident. It compares the stored offset versus the new offset after a learning distance of 10 km. The allowed misalignment is 10deg (equals a 1.73 m/s� offset difference).

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.
