What code MCU_w005 means

The Media Control Unit — the computer behind the centre screen. Besides its own faults, everyday driver notices come from here too: empty washer fluid, an open door, a flat key fob battery. Most MCU codes are therefore not a vehicle defect.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Brake Fluid Low: Contact Tesla Service

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The brake fluid levels have dropped below acceptable levels.

Driver experiences with code MCU_w005

This part is written by you. If you have had code MCU_w005, tell us when it appeared, what brought it on and how it ended — for the next person, one such sentence is often worth more than the entire service documentation.

To méně vážné: opotřebené brzdové destičky. To vážné: netěsnost. Objednejte servis a do té doby jezděte opatrně.

To menej vážne: opotrebované brzdové platničky.

To mniej poważne: zużyte klocki hamulcowe. To poważne: nieszczelność. Uzupełnienie poziomu bez ustalenia przyczyny to zamaskowanie wycieku. Umów serwis, a do tego czasu jedź ostrożnie. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Brake Fluid Low: Contact Tesla Service” and it is one of the few completely unambiguous messages: the brake fluid level has dropped below an acceptable level. Why that is not a trifle: the braking system is a closed circuit. The fluid has nowhere to go — unlike oil it does not evaporate or burn off. If there is less of it, there are essentially two explanations, and one of them is serious. The less serious one: worn brake pads. As the pads wear down, the pistons in the calipers extend further and fluid moves from the reservoir into the calipers. The level in the reservoir therefore falls naturally as the brakes wear. On a Tesla that takes a long time, because regeneration does most of the braking, but eventually it happens. The serious one: a leak. A cracked hose, a failed caliper seal, a loose union on a line. Losing brake fluid means that at some point the pedal goes to the floor and the car does not stop. What to do: look underneath the car for drips and check the pad thickness. Above all, though — do not simply top the fluid up and do not keep driving until you know why it went down. Topping up without establishing the cause means masking a leak. Book service and drive gently until then. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
