What code VCFRONT_a191 means

Vehicle Controller Front — the front body controller. It handles the 12 V supply, the frunk, lights, wipers, pumps and cooling valves. One of the most frequently reported groups, because 12 V battery problems land here too.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

VCFRONT_a191_exitDriveLow12V

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Není to rozmar; bez spolehlivé dvanáctky nefungují posilovač řízení, brzdový asistent ani stykače vysokého napětí, takže vůz raději zastaví, dokud to má pod kontrolou. Hlásí ho Model 3 a Model Y.

Zgłaszają go Model 3 i Model Y.

The screen shows “Electrical system power reduced” and it is one of the most serious messages a Tesla can raise. The car is about to stop, wherever you happen to be. What happened: the low-voltage side of the electrics — the 12-volt system — is no longer healthy. The car responds with a controlled shutdown: it will not let you drive off, and if you are already moving it ends the drive itself and comes to a stop. This is not a whim; without reliable 12 volts the steering assistance, the brake assist and the high-voltage contactors do not work, so the car would rather stop while it is still in control. What triggers it: 12-volt battery voltage below threshold for three seconds, an open switching transistor connecting the battery, active load shedding, or a detected fault in the reverse-polarity protection. What to do if it appears while driving: do not panic and get out of the traffic lane as quickly as you can. The car gives you only limited time — it will stop by itself. Steering and brakes will still work, but heavier and requiring more force, because the assistance may drop out. What next: this is not one to restart and drive on from. The most common cause is a 12-volt battery at the end of its life, or its charging, but the code can also mean a fault elsewhere. The car belongs on a flatbed to a service centre, not on the road. Reported by Model 3 and Model Y.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
