What code VCFRONT_a234 means

Vehicle Controller Front — the front body controller. It handles the 12 V supply, the frunk, lights, wipers, pumps and cooling valves. One of the most frequently reported groups, because 12 V battery problems land here too.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

VCFRONT_a234_autopilot2EFuseFault

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Autopilot 2 eFuse has tripped

Too much current detected by the Autopilot 2 high side driver

Current back within nominal range for the high side driver.

Přední řídicí jednotka to zjistila a Teslin popis uvádí i proč: vysokostranný spínač napájení naměřil proud vyšší, než jaký odpovídá normálnímu provozu. Hlásí ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

Przedni sterownik to wykrył, a opis Tesli podaje też dlaczego: łącznik górny zasilania zmierzył prąd wyższy, niż odpowiada normalnej pracy. Zgłaszają go Cybertruck i Model 3.

This code means Autopilot is gone — and the reason is remarkably specific. What happened: the electronic fuse on the Autopilot supply has tripped. The front vehicle controller detected it, and Tesla's description also gives the reason: the high side driver measured current flow exceeding normal operation. What an electronic fuse is: the counterpart of a classic fuse that switches off electronically instead of blowing. The advantage is that it can be reset and it records what happened. There is no real disadvantage — which is why they are used instead of fuses wherever it matters. Why it tripped: overcurrent in a supply means something beyond that fuse is drawing more than it should. Either there is a short somewhere, or the Autopilot unit is damaged, or the wiring is faulty. In each of those cases tripping is the correct response — the fuse did exactly what it is there for. What it means on the road: Autopilot and assistance features are unavailable. The car drives normally, just without the assistants. What is practical about this code: it clears itself once the current returns to normal and the fuse closes again. So an isolated occurrence may mean a one-off spike. What to do: if it repeats, have it checked — and do not try to bypass the fuse or reset it repeatedly. Recurring overcurrent always has a cause, and finding it belongs in service. Reported by Cybertruck and Model 3.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
