What code VCFRONT_a235 means

Vehicle Controller Front — the front body controller. It handles the 12 V supply, the frunk, lights, wipers, pumps and cooling valves. One of the most frequently reported groups, because 12 V battery problems land here too.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The powertrain's coolant temperature sensor is reporting an incorrect value. Possible VCFRONT internal electrical issue. Powertrain performance may be limited.

An irrational difference in the powertrain coolant temperature sensor values and the drive inverter's own temperature sensor values.

Difference between the powertrain coolant temperature sensor value and the drive inverter temperature sensor values is nominal.

Gemeldet vom Cybertruck.

Zgłasza go Cybertruck.

This code belongs to the Cybertruck and shows itself as reduced power. What happened: the powertrain coolant temperature sensor is reporting an incorrect value. How that is detected is the interesting part of this code — the car compares what this sensor reports with what the drive inverter believes the temperature to be from its own measurement. When the two diverge implausibly, one of them is known to be lying. Why comparing two sources is clever: a single sensor is hard to check. If it says eighty degrees, there is nothing to compare that against. But if one sensor claims eighty and another forty, it is clear something is wrong, even without knowing which is right. The same principle as the two sensors on the accelerator pedal. What Tesla adds: it may be an internal electrical issue in the front vehicle controller. So it need not be the sensor itself — the input it connects to can be faulty. What it means on the road: drivetrain performance may be limited. Without a trustworthy temperature the car has no way of knowing whether the drivetrain is overheating, so it backs off. What you will notice: the car does not accelerate as usual, especially under sustained load or uphill. What to do: you can get home, but do not work the car hard. Have the diagnostics read out — it may be the sensor, the wiring, or the unit itself, and there is no telling those apart without diagnostics. Reported by the Cybertruck.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
