What code VCFRONT_a465 means

Vehicle Controller Front — the front body controller. It handles the 12 V supply, the frunk, lights, wipers, pumps and cooling valves. One of the most frequently reported groups, because 12 V battery problems land here too.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert is set when refrigerant flow index is below expected levels and subcool is high

The ESP eFuse reported a current value over 100A within the last 10ms.

The chiller EXV's motor driver has reported a fault.

Hlásí ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

Hlási ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

Ein einzelnes Vorkommen muss also nichts bedeuten.

Zgłaszają go Cybertruck i Model 3.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen — it is a service record from the refrigerant circuit and the mirror image of VCFRONT_a466. What happened: the refrigerant flow index is low while subcooling is high. The car compares how much refrigerant the compressor says should be flowing with how much the expansion valves say actually is — and the numbers do not agree. What subcooling is: how much colder the liquefied refrigerant is than its boiling point at the prevailing pressure. High subcooling with low flow usually means refrigerant is pooling somewhere and not moving on as it should — typically because of a restriction or an expansion valve that is not opening fully. How to tell it from its sibling: with VCFRONT_a466 the flow is high and subcooling low, pointing more to a shortage of refrigerant. Here it is the other way round — there is enough refrigerant, it simply is not flowing. For a technician that is the difference that determines where to look. What it means on the road: Tesla's description notes the thermal system may not perform as expected. In practice weaker air conditioning, slower fast charging in the heat, and an earlier power limit under load. What is practical: the code clears itself once the car wakes from sleep or the values return to normal. So an isolated occurrence need not mean anything. What to do: repeated occurrences with visible symptoms belong in service — the refrigerant circuit is opened only with the proper equipment. Reported by Cybertruck and Model 3.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
