What code BMS_f084 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Battery Management System (BMS) has detected that there is an imbalance in the high voltage (HV) battery pack.

Vůz proto raději zastaví, než aby to riskoval.

Was tun: Anhalten und abschleppen lassen.

Naprawa dotyczy wnętrza pakietu bateryjnego i należy wyłącznie do serwisu. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: PULL OVER SAFELY” and the car is asking you to stop safely. What happened: the battery management detected an imbalance in the high-voltage pack. Cell groups that should sit at similar voltages are at markedly different ones. Why this is more serious than other imbalance codes: there is a code BMS_u018, which responds to imbalance by limiting charging to half. This is a different league — the letter “f” means fault, and the on-screen message asks you to pull over. So the spread between groups is large enough that the car does not want to continue. Why imbalance matters: the battery is governed by its weakest group. If one sits well below the others, under load it can fall below the safe threshold before the rest of the pack gives any hint. And deeply discharging a group is irreversible damage, after which charging is no longer safe. The car would rather stop than risk that. What usually causes it: one cell group ageing faster than the rest. A faulty sensor or monitoring board reporting the wrong voltage. Less often an internal short in a cell. What to do: stop and have it towed. Do not try to continue or to charge — with imbalance on this scale, charging is the worst thing you can do. The repair involves the inside of the battery pack and belongs exclusively in service. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
