What code THC_d0004 means

Thermal management — air conditioning, the high-voltage cabin heater, the coolant loop and its level. These codes show up as weak heating, limited defrosting or a low coolant level message.

Severity — d

A service record that is not shown to the driver. Only a technician sees it in diagnostics.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The coolant pump DTC is set on the Thermal Controller (THC) if the following alerts occur repeatedly over a specific time frame. THC_w0039_pumpPTLimp is set for 300 seconds or 100 times with less than 30 minutes between each occurrence. THC_w0040_pumpPTStop is set for 120 seconds or 10 times with less than 30 minutes between each occurrence. THC_w0044_sanityPumpPT is set for 120 seconds or 100 times with less than 30 minutes between each occurrence. THC_w0045_pumpPTFaultMax is set for 300 seconds or 100 times with less than 30 minutes between each occurrence.

Diagnose the pump condition by investigating the relevant pump alert article(s) under Possible Causes.

Eine einzelne Warnung bedeutet also keinen Defekt. Was tun: Lassen Sie die Diagnose auslesen.

Bywa to uszkodzona pompa, powietrze w obiegu, zatkany obieg albo jej zasilanie.

A driver will not see this code on the screen — the letter “d” in the middle marks a diagnostic record meant for a service centre. What happened: the thermal controller logged a trouble code for the drivetrain coolant pump. What is interesting about this code is how it arises: it is not set by one event but as the sum of repeated warnings. Tesla's description gives specific thresholds — one of the warnings about a limited or stopped pump must persist for five minutes, or occur a hundred times with less than half an hour between occurrences. Why it is built this way: the pump occasionally throttles briefly or stops entirely legitimately — when the circuit is switching over, say, or while the system is cold. So a single warning does not mean a fault. Only when it keeps happening is it clear something is wrong, and only then is this summary record written. What it means for the owner: if this code appears, the drivetrain coolant pump is failing repeatedly. The consequence is usually limited power under load, slower fast charging, and in the extreme a drivetrain shutdown on temperature. What to do: have the diagnostics read out. This code is exactly the trace a technician needs — it says the problem is not random but recurring. It is usually a faulty pump, air in the circuit, a blocked circuit, or the pump's power supply.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
