What code BMS_f086 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: Unable to Start Car

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Battery Management System (BMS) has detected an issue that has prevented precharging.

Co s tím: vůz nepojede a restarty nepomůžou. Objednejte odtah do servisu a nechte vyčíst, jaký doprovodný kód precharge zablokoval.

Zamów holowanie do serwisu i zleć odczytanie, jaki kod towarzyszący zablokował precharge. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Unable to Start Car” and the car will not move off. What happened: the battery management found a problem preventing the circuit from precharging, so the pack contactors stay open. What precharge is and why it exists: behind the pack contactors sit large capacitors in the inverters. If the contactors closed straight onto full voltage, an enormous inrush current would flow into those empty capacitors and weld the contactor contacts together. So the circuit is first charged slowly to operating voltage through a resistor, and only then does the main contactor close. This intermediate step takes a fraction of a second and happens every time the car wakes. What it means: without a successful precharge the car will not connect high voltage. And without high voltage there is no driving, no charging, and no support for the 12-volt system. The car simply stays put. What may lie behind it: a faulty precharge resistor or its contactor, a short or leakage in the circuit beyond the contactors, a faulty contactor itself, battery voltage that is too low. The code does not carry the cause — that sits in the detailed alert data. What to do: the car will not go and restarts will not help. Arrange a tow to a service centre and have them read out which accompanying code blocked the precharge. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
